Ok, to help you deciding between a Dedicated Server and Virtual Private Server let’s begin with the basic concepts for each one:
Dedicated Server
A Dedicated Server is a type of Internet hosting where the client rent an entire server and don’t share it with anyone. Such choice is more flexible compared to shared hosting, as a group has full control over the server, including choice of the operating system, hardware, etc. Server administration can usually be provided by the hosting company as an add-on service (Managed Dedicated Hosting). Normally a dedicated server offers less overhead and a larger return on investment.
Dedicated servers are often housed in data centers, similar to collocation facilities, providing HVAC systems. But different from collocation the server hardware is owned by the provider that will provide support for your operating system or applications.
VPS (Virtual Private Server) or VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server)
A VPS is a method of sharing/partitioning a physical server computer into multiple servers. Each one has the appearance and capabilities of running on its own machine. Each virtual server can run its own operating system, and each server can be rebooted independently.
The partitioning a single server method that it appears as multiple servers has long been used in mainframe computers, but has gained popularity with the development of virtualization software architecture.
Difference between Dedicated Server and VPS
Besides the price and technical differences although a Virtual Private Server allows for increased security, and control within an isolated environment, it is still considered “shared” web hosting as you are sharing CPU and memory resources with other users on the same machine.
Going to a Dedicated Server you can still utilize the Virtual Private Server technology on your own physical server. This way you know that full server resources are being utilized by your group only: Completely independent and completely dedicated.
Deciding between Dedicated Server and VPS
The dedicated server option allows you to maintain a larger website while not having to be concerned about employing the staff to support it. But due to the price differences, it’s recommended that you mind the following points before taking a decision regarding a Dedicated Server:
- Need having a large enough website to justify the Dedicated cost
- Dedicated are as fast, powerful and high-capacity as you purchase
- Dedicated server hosting is powerful, yet expensive. If your sites don’t require a huge resource, you shouldn’t.
